Almost £1 million worth of improvements are taking place on a stretch of the M6 near Wigan and St Helens, providing smoother and safer journeys for drivers. Contractors for Highways England are resurfacing a two-mile stretch of the M6 between junctions 23 and 25, equivalent to the size of seven rugby league pitches. Over 500 new reflective road studs are also being installed along the route, improving visibility, and road markings are being repainted. At around 11.30pm, a black Peugeot 307 was travelling along Wennington Road, Southport. As the car approached the junction with  Chester Avenue and Chester Road, it collided with a tree. Some public concern has been raised over excess drinking and antisocial conduct on barges that spoils the waterway for other canal users In this following instance two barges crashed together creating a loud bang. It was not confirmed if the craft sustained any damage. Sefton Council will be carrying out essential maintenance work on Southport Pier, starting on Tuesday 1 September. The works, which are expected to last around one month, will involve timber repairs and painting as well as scaffolding under the Pier. Pupils at primary schools in Southport have taken part in a special art project to raise awareness of littering. School children were asked to design a poster advertising ‘Rubbish Friends’ – a local initiative aimed at encouraging people of all ages to dispose of their waste responsibly. Rubbish Friends was introduced in 2012 by councillors Pat Keith and Sue McGuire in a bid to decrease the amount of litter within the local community.
