A local couple looking to rent their dream home in the town almost became the victims of scammers pretending to be vacant property owners. The scammers used property listed for rental online to contact the couple through Facebook in order to obtain personal details and identification documents from the pair and almost succeeded in extorting £2000. The couple became suspicious when the “owner” was unable to offer them a viewing of the property prior to moving in and insisted upon payment of deposit before the keys would be “couriered” to them. These products are not safe and pose a large suffocation risk for young children. Sharon Pantellerisco, a single mum from Southport has been successful in challenging the Department for Work and Pensions over universal credit rules in the High Court this week. Receiving payment from her employer four-weekly rather than monthly reduced her universal credit by up to £463 per month. Ms Pantellerisco is the sole carer of her three dependent children who all live with her and is employed for 16 hours a week on the national living wage but, because she was paid on a four-week basis, this resulted in her falling short of the income threshold to avoid a benefit cap.…

The stretch of the Coastal Road between Woodvale and Pontins has been temporarily closed this afternoon after a fire broke out in a council waste disposal vehice. The road will remain closed until the vehicle has been recovered and the contents of the wagon cleared from the carriageway. Diversions are in place.

Allan Corlett, 75, from Formby was this week handed a 20-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months along with a restraining order after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. A police incident is in progress at the traffic light-controlled junction of Norwood Avenue and Roe Lane in Churchtown. Numerous police cars are in attendance alongside a police van with officers searching stopped cars along Roe Lane. Motorists are being advised to avoid the area. Shaun Esterhuizen, 40 of the Promenade Southport, pleaded guilty to possession of heroin and cocaine with intent to supply at Liverpool Crown Court earlier this month and has now been sentenced to 27 months in prison. The father of two was found asleep at the wheel of his VW with the engine running, in Elm Road Southport in November 2019. He had in his possession 25 wraps of cocaine worth approximately £245, as well as loose cocaine powder and crack cocaine stone.
