Southport Business Improvement District is backing new rules which require customers to wear face coverings or face masks when visiting shops and supermarkets from this Friday (July 24). A Southport councillor is calling for local people to ‘jump the gun’ when it comes to wearing masks in the town’s shops rather than waiting until Friday when it becomes illegal to shop without covering your mouth and nose. As the school Summer holidays begin, MP Damien Moore is urging Sefton Council to reopen playgrounds for local families to use. The MP wants the local authority to open up the facilities in many of its main sites in Southport and elsewhere in the borough. A man has been charged with impersonating a police officer in Halsall. Police launched an investigation after it was reported a man had approached a group of people at a bus stop in New Street on June 27. It was alleged the man identified himself as an officer and searched the group, taking a quantity of cash. Following extensive enquiries a man was arrested in connection with the incident. Connor Webb, 21, of Boyer Avenue, Maghull, has been charged with impersonating an officer and theft. He has been bailed to appear at Preston Magistrates’ Court on September 3.

Police are issuing images of a man who may have information following a sexual offence in Birkenhead in May. At around 8.20pm on Wednesday 27 May, CCTV footage at the Pyramids Shopping Centre captured a man exposing himself and committing an sexual act. Enquiries are ongoing. Community Foundation for Merseyside has donated £5,000 to sight loss charity Galloway’s to help relieve the loneliness of visually impaired people in the Sefton area. The money is from the foundation’s LCR Cares – COVID-19 Community Support Fund and National Emergencies Trust. Detectives have charged a 19 year old man following disorder on Friday night, 26th June. Matthew Egglesden, 19 of Turning Lane, Scarisbrick has been charged with causing criminal damage to the Royal Liver building and firing fireworks in a public place, (namely the Pier Head). Part of a Second World War fighter aircraft found buried in sand dunes near Formby has been identified as an American plane that crashed in 1944. The piece of the aircraft was found on the Sefton Coast which has the largest sand dune system in England, stretching for 20 kilometres between Liverpool and Southport.
