Teaching your child to ski vs hiring an instructor

    By Olivia Hungtington27th October 2025

When planning family ski holidays, it can sometimes feel overwhelming trying to balance the right number of lessons, slopes and rest for your child. Deciding the right way to teach your child skiing before they hit the slopes is essential to make your trip as smooth and stress-free as possible. Both approaches offer distinct advantages, and understanding the difference can help you create the perfect winter experience for your family.

    • Teaching Your Own Child

If you’re an experienced skier, you might think that teaching your own child to ski is the most efficient and cost-effective way forward. Whilst partly true, there are some elements you must take into consideration. Preparedness matters quite a bit. Changes in weather or your child’s energy levels require backup plans, whether that means having extra hand warmers or a sugary snack ready. Expectations versus reality often differ as well; whilst you may have grand visions of your child mastering the slopes, the most important part is that they have fun and develop a positive association with skiing. Regular breaks prevent unwanted breakdowns, both physical and emotional. Children generally start skiing from ages 3 to 4 when they develop the necessary motor skills and balance, making this the ideal time to introduce them to the sport. Celebrating small wins, whether putting the skis on or completing their first slope, gives your child the motivation and encouragement needed to continue learning.

    • Why Hire a Professional Instructor

Even the most advanced skiers often opt for professional instructors to teach their children how to ski properly. No matter how advanced you are at skiing, hiring a professional instructor helps build your child’s independence and confidence whilst guaranteeing their safety. Professional ski instructors can adapt their teaching style to suit children, beginners and intermediates, helping students gain confidence on the slopes whilst parents enjoy their own skiing. Instructors understand child development and use age-appropriate teaching methods that parents might not be familiar with, making lessons more effective and enjoyable.

    • Convenience vs Cost

When deciding whether to self-teach your child or hire an instructor, two main factors typically come into consideration: convenience and cost. Whilst it may be more convenient to teach your child yourself (after all, you know them better than anyone, and it’s free), it can also prove stressful, which may impact your ability to teach effectively. Teaching needs patience that can be difficult to maintain with your own child. Conversely, a professional instructor, although pricey, can teach your child how to safely ski and help them progress quickly using proven techniques. Many parents find that investing in professional lessons during a family ski holiday allows them to enjoy their own skiing whilst their children learn safely and effectively.

Ultimately, the decision depends on your family’s priorities, budget, and your child’s temperament. Many families find that a combination works best. For instance, professional lessons to build foundational skills and safety awareness, supplemented by practice time with parents to reinforce learning and create special family memories on the slopes.
