Sports Isn’t Told Solely by the Scoreboard: Ben Lars Schlitz Explains the Importance of Running Commentaries

    By John Hall23rd December 2023

When you think about sports, most of us picture the roaring crowd, dramatic plays, and, of course, the scoreboard displaying the winner. We imagine NBA legends such as Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Larry Bird, and (more recently) Anthony Edwards. However, behind every memorable competition exists an announcer or commentator who truly brings the game to life. Enter Ben Lars Schlitz; a man who’s not only covered sports, but who has delved deep into why running commentaries matter just as much as the event in question.

Hailing from Stuttgart, Germany, Ben is a fascinating character. His talents include sports journalism, writing, research, and (surprisingly) much more. He is also someone who knows the ins and outs of cutting-edge digital trends such as cryptocurrencies, online betting, and FinTech. With a background that includes studies at the University of Mannheim, and Heidelberg University, Ben’s journey is undoubtedly the stuff of legends.

In this article, we’ll walk through his insights on how sports commentaries shape our understanding of the game; revealing these are much more than background noise at matches. Think of this interview as a relaxed conversation with someone who sees sport in a broader, more circumspect manner.

The Man Behind the Mic: A Closer Look at Ben Lars Schlitz

Ben’s career spans an intriguing mix of fields. While many know him as a sports journalist, his expertise spans a diverse range of fields; online gambling and cryptocurrency trading representing two of his passions. This knowledge base allows his sports commentaries to become even more compelling. Born in 1971 in Stuttgart, Ben spent his youth immersed in the cultural tapestry of Germany. When combined with his fluency in both German and English, the ability to reach out to diverse audiences soon became a reality.

Ben likewise chose to study how digital advancements are transforming the ways in which we engage with sports; both as viewers and participants. However, what really drives this multifaceted powerhouse is his belief that sport is about storytelling far beyond the scoreboard. The commentaries, the narratives, and the emotion they evoke are some examples that he has brought to light. Imagine how lacklustre many of Michael Jordan’s dunks would have been playing with the Chicago Bulls would have been without the presence of a real-time commentator.

Sports Commentaries: More Than Just Words in the Air

Ben often points out that running commentaries have a unique power. They set the tone, build tension, and make us hang on each moment. I sat down with him (well, more like a relaxed chat over email) to understand what makes this aspect of sport so vital.

He explains, “Think about a live NBA competition between rivals such as the Bulls and the Knicks. The scoreboard tells us who’s winning or losing, but the commentary fills in the gaps. Why is a player making a certain move? How is a point guard thwarting his opponent? How was a certain power forward such as Anthony Davis able to lead his team to victory?”

According to him, “Commentators are storytellers. They’re narrators of the game’s drama. They capture the nuances that numbers alone can’t convey. They help us understand the emotional weight of a singular moment.”

The Art of Storytelling in Sports

What strikes me the most about Ben’s views is his perspective on how commentaries create a mutually shared experience. For many fans, the voices of commentators become as iconic as the players themselves. Think of legendary voices like John Madden in American football or Marv Albert during his stint with the NBA. These narrators have not only described the game. They have helped define its cultural impact across decades.

Ben points out that in the age of digital streaming platforms and social media, the role of the commentator continues to evolve.

“It’s not just about the live call any more; it’s about how that commentary is shared, repurposed, and reinterpreted. Whether a podcast, a dedicated online article, a YouTube clip, or a social media snippet, these narratives influence how we remember sports moments.”

He emphasises that commentaries give us context. They transform a sequence of events into a story that provides real-world meaning to the recipient. Without this level of input, a seemingly impossible goal or a record-breaking performance might represent nothing more than a blip in time.

Why We Still Need the Human Touch

Given the rise of AI and so-called “automated” commentaries, I asked Ben if he thinks machines will eventually replace real commentators. He chuckles a little before answering:

“Technology is great, but the human aspect is irreplaceable. The emotion, the instinct, the cultural context are what make any commentary special. A human commentator can read a room, react to unexpected moments, and connect with viewers on a personal level.”

He continues to stress that commentaries also reflect cultural nuances. “A German commentator might bring different energy and storytelling styles than an English-speaking one. That diversity adds flavour to sporting narratives.”

Ben believes that technology can nonetheless enhance (but not replace) the role of the live storyteller. “What we need is a balance. Human voices that bring passion in synergy with data-driven insights from AI could elevate the ultimate experience.”

The Impact on Fans and Broader Society

From his perspective, the implications go beyond just sports fans. Commentaries influence perceptions, build community, and even inspire future athletes. He is also well aware of these effects when stating that:

“My responsibility as a commentator is to serve the public, and this often involves much more than simply following the state of play at any given time. I’m also a marketing representative, a brand ambassador, and occasionally, I’m humbled enough to meet a young fan who hopes to follow my career path.”

Ben Lars Schlitz certainly has a lot on his plate, and as far as a commentator, he is well ahead of the game.
