Work has begun on a major refurbishment of Station Approach, the covered mall linking Southport Station to Chapel Street.
The owners of the mall are working with the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority on the project, which will focus on repairing and redecorating the walkway that serves as the main pedestrian route between the town’s railway station and its principal shopping street.
The first phase of work started on 9 April and is due for completion by 10 July, ahead of The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale Golf Club this summer, when more than 250,000 visitors are expected to travel through Southport.
The project will aim to improve the appearance, functionality and overall experience of the mall, which has long served as a gateway for commuters, residents and visitors arriving by train.
A spokesperson for the project said: “Station Approach is a vital link between Southport Station and Chapel Street, and this project represents an important investment in the town’s future.
“By working closely with the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, we are delivering investment that will benefit local businesses while ensuring Southport is ready to welcome visitors ahead of the Open Championship this summer.”
Pedestrian access through Station Approach will remain open throughout the construction period, and all shops and businesses in and around the site will continue to be accessible. Signage will be in place to guide visitors through the area during the works.
Further updates are expected as the project progresses beyond the first phase.
