Residents across Sefton are being asked to give their views on a new Local Plan that will help shape the Borough over the next 15 to 20 years.
Sefton Council is starting work on a new Local Plan, which would come into effect in 2029 and last to 2044, to better guide how the Borough’s towns, villages, communities and neighbourhoods will grow and change in that time.
Consultation
All homes across Sefton will receive leaflets explaining how the refreshed plan will help them and their families, with a first stage consultation asking residents to have their say on what key topics they believe should be included in the Local Plan.
This stage will run until Friday, September 18, while future consultation stages will seek to refine its contents prior to a formal submission being made by Sefton Council to Central Government in late 2028.
Cllr Phil Hart, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Highways, said: “the Local Plan will affect every part of Sefton, including setting out how much development our Borough will need up to 2044. This means how many new homes, jobs, community facilities and infrastructure projects are necessary to keep Sefton prospering.
Good quality homes
“We also want the Plan to identify where development of good quality, affordable homes should go, and conversely the areas that should be protected from development.
“It’s not just about housing for future generations and families who want to live and work in Sefton, we want your views on how the Plan addresses future public transport needs, school provision, health services and parks and nature.
“Regenerating our communities, growing the economy, protecting our environment and heritage, while responding to a changing climate are just some of the challenges we face and a new Local Plan is going to help us meet those challenges head on with a robust community led approach.”
Designed by residents
The Local Plan will be prepared in stages over the next few years with several chances for residents and others to influence what it will include. In later stages, people will be able to attend public events, share ideas online through surveys and comment on draft versions of the Plan when they are published.

You can also comment on how we should engage on the Local Plan in the future. Comments should be received no later than midnight on 18th September 2026.
