Jekyll and Hyde The Musical in Southport

    By Hayley Mann4th November 2022

    50th Anniversary of MMT

Maghull Musical Theatre Company is proud to present its latest spectacular for the people of Southport and around. They will be performing Jekyll and Hyde the Musical at Southport’s Little Theatre. 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the Maghull Musical Theatre Company, and they are thrilled to bring this iconic and thrilling musical to the stage.

    Award Winning Combination

Jekyll and Hyde is an epic tale of the struggle between good and evil. In this telling of the story, Maghull’s amateur players will be performing a score and script crafted by true professionals. The music has been created by multi-Grammy and Tony-nominated Frank Wildhorn. It features pop-rock hits in his signature style. The script is primarily the work of double Oscar and Grammy-winning Leslie Bricusse. The classic story by Robert Louis Stevenson was adapted for the stage by Steve Cuden. All three of these greats created the lyrics.

Performances will include a Saturday matinee, and the show runs from 2nd – 5th November. Tickets are £17.00 a seat and can be bought directly from MMT.

    Broadway Hit

Jekyll and Hyde the Musical was first brought to the stage by the trio of Cuden, Wildhorn and Bricusse in 1990. The stage version is loosely based on the 1886 novella by Robert Louis Stevenson, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It premiered in Houston, Texas and then was toured nationally before it debuted on Broadway in 1997. There have subsequently been more US and UK tours and even an Australian concert version.

    Inspired by a Novella

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is an evocative tale of two men and two women. Over the years, the story has worked its way into our collective consciousnesses. We all understand the idea of someone having a Jekyll and Hyde personality, even if we have never read the book or seen the films and plays it has inspired. We know it means someone can have two sides: one good and one filled with inner demons. There have been numerous adaptations of the book, including multiple Hollywood versions.

Jekyll and Hyde’s cameos have also appeared in all kinds of screen incarnations, including in the popular children’s cartoon Scooby Doo. In total, there are around one hundred and twenty-five known adaptations from radio plays to video games and TV series. In addition, several video slot developers have also used the story to create exciting online games. For example, Microgaming and Playtech, who make some of the best RTP slots in the UK, have Jekyll and Hyde-themed games.

    The Story

The novella tells the tale of a passionate, romantic doctor and a terrifying madman. Dr Jekyll is a man of science driven to find a chemical breakthrough to solve some of humanity’s medical dilemmas. His father is plagued with mental illness, and Dr Jekyll is desperate to find a cure for him. He is prepared to challenge even the most complex cases by unconventional means. However, his unorthodox approach is rebuffed by the powers that be. He, therefore, makes himself the subject of his own experimental treatments. This leads to him accidentally unleashing his inner demons and the side of himself we know as Mr Hyde. As well as a gothic horror story, it is also a tale of love and two beautiful trusting women.

    A Race Against Time

Mr Hyde embarks on the trail of murderous havoc across the city of London. Jekyll’s fiancée, Emma, becomes increasingly fearful for her betrothed. Meanwhile, a prostitute, Lucy, becomes dangerously involved with the doctor and his alter ego. Jekyll has to find a way to control Hyde before he takes over for good. So the race is on to find a cure for the demon he has created.

The musical features songs like ‘Facade’, ‘This is The Moment’ and ‘Someone Like You’. It has been described as a thrilling gothic musical that will have you on the edge of your seat.
