Hostile vehicle barriers result in extended Remembrance Sunday road closures

Sefton is once again preparing for Remembrance Sunday 2026 with eleven services taking place across the Borough.

Additional security measures will be put in place from this year for parades at Bootle, Litherland, Waterloo and Southport in accordance with Martyn’s Law.

Southport roads closed from 8am on Remembrance Sunday are Lord Street (From Eastbank Street up until Hill St), Nevill Street, London Street, London Square, Hoghton Street, St George’s Place and Post Office Avenue.

To ensure the safety of both parade participants and residents, Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) systems will be installed along each route.

While this will have no impact on the Remembrance Sunday services, the new security measures will mean traditional road closures in the area will be in place for longer periods.

These closures will now begin from 8am on Sunday, November 8th and roads are expected to be reopened by no later than 1pm on the same day.

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: “Due to these extended closure times there may be additional disruption on residential and business properties and we recommend making alternative arrangements regarding vehicle access and exit to affected properties.

“Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause.”
