Crime alert for the residents of North Sefton from Merseyside Police

    By Community Contributor21st September 2020

Between the 3rd September and the 16th September 2020 burglaries or attempted burglaries have taken place in the following locations:

    Scams

A variation on a previous scam has occurred in Sefton. A resident received an automated phone call telling her that a court case  had been brought against her concerning her National Insurance number. She was told that if she failed to contact them her National Insurance number would be cancelled and it would appear that she  was avoiding an appearance before the Magistrate. The resident  hung up but made a note of the caller’s number.

    Green Homes Grant

A National newspaper reported that since the Coronavirus  Pandemic started, fraud victims are losing a total of at least £11.5 million a day to scammers, the true figure is thought to be much higher, because only a fraction of all frauds are officially reported.

In one such scam a so-called adviser would call you on the phone to say you were eligible to obtain the new Government Green Homes Grant, you would receive a voucher worth up to £5000 which you could spend on your home to make it more energy efficient. The scammer would then direct  you to a fake application in order to obtain your personal details. This could result in either identity theft or an attempt to steal your money.

This scheme does not start until the end of September so any call before then may not be genuine. If you are contacted

and are interested in taking advantage of the scheme residents are advised not to follow the instructions given by the caller in case the scam continues.
