Councillor David Barton has welcomed a move from the Lib Dems who have agreed to his call for more free parking in the town centre in the run-up to Christmas.

Councillor Barton has agreed his Dukes Ward will fund £2000 towards the initiative – the largest contribution from any ward.

Last week Cllr Barton said the idea of free parking in the town centre should be explored after freak weather conditions left some roads without markings.

Councillor Barton said; “I’m pleased that all parties have agreed this is a good thing for both local business and residents in the festive season.

“I hope the free parking will encourage more locals and visitors to southport to visit our shops.”

Councillor Barton hopes that the remaining Councillors will approve the measures in time for it to take place before Christmas.
