Conservative Councillors tour newly refurbished Southport Market

    By Community Contributor30th May 2021

Sefton’s Conservative Councillors were recently given a tour of the newly refurbished Southport Market which is scheduled to open towards the end of June.

The market has been revamped at a cost of £1.4 million with £900,000 of the cost being covered by the accelerated funding awarded as part of the successful Town Deal bid.

Tony Brough, Leader of the Conservative Group on Sefton Council said, “It was great to have the opportunity to see the works that have been carried out at Southport Market, funded to a large extent by the Town Deal monies that our local MP, Damien Moore, and all those on the Town Deal Board worked so hard to obtain.

“We would like to thank those council officers who the found time to do so and answer all of our questions about the scheme.

“There have been issues in the past with the financial viability of Southport Market and I and my Conservative colleagues will be keeping a close eye on the business plan for Southport Market to ensure it does not continue to be a drain on the public purse.

“However, we are all encouraged by the work that has been carried out with the site now going to be providing a high quality food and drink offering with space for events which should be a positive addition to what Southport Town Centre has to offer for those who already live here and for visitors as well.’
