Blue bin rollout delayed due to coronavirus

26th April 2021

The proposed rollout of a glass recycling blue bin has been placed on hold due to Covid-19.

Sefton Council approved the blue bin scheme in September, saying that new government legislation requires some materials for recycling to be collected separately.

However Sefton Council has confirmed to OTS News that the scheme will be revisited “when the time is right.”

The scheme was not without its opponents, who cited concern over residents being asked to accommodate a fourth wheelie bin alongside grey waste, brown recycling and green garden waste.

Sefton’s Liberal Democrat leader John Pugh said the scheme would cost Sefton Council approximately £1.7m, though the Council estimated earning an additional £400,000 annually from Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority as a result of removing glass from its general recycling collections.

In October the Liberal Democrats made a move to block the rollout until a full public consultation could be conducted, but this motion was defeated.
