VIDEO | Cromer Road Residents’ pleas for help ignored by Southport Liberal Democrats

23rd March 2017

Despite the best efforts of crusading Councillor David Barton and the local residents at Cromer Road, Birkdale a recent collective initiative to address a long- standing issue that has plagued local residents for almost two decades has been thwarted by the local Southport Liberal Democrats.

Having produced a report in concert with data provided by the local community and various agencies including Sefton Council and Merseyside Police to support the affected residents this was dismissed by the remaining Councillor for Dukes Ward and the Liberal Democrats despite having previously implied in a written correspondence that he would be willing to commit to the very same funding initiative.

Residents are greatly shocked and disappointed at having been publicly betrayed by a Party who have been shown to now be at odds with their very own MP for the resort- Mr John Pugh who even himself once suggested “time to ply more pressure on Councillors“.

Despite the serial prejudice predisposed to Councillor Barton throughout the course of the meeting what was even more alarming was the lack of compassion for the residents  who have been subject to in no particular order: verbal abuse, inconsiderate car parking , speeding and fear of crime. Various residents have since written to John Pugh MP and other officials requesting a formal apology for their behaviour at last night’s meeting and overriding arrogance towards the general public.

Cllr David Barton added: “I should like to thank all the residents of the Cromer Road community, including all the agencies such as Merseyside Police who have previously supported the case for our funding request. Despite being unable to acquire the support of the remaining Councillor for the district I shall be further investigating additional ways to support the residents here .

like to rebuke the complacent remarks expressed by other members, especially after one resident was told that people should be expected to leave the area if they not content with the present car parking arrangements!

I also recommend that Merseyside Police report all known incidents of reported anti-social car parking over residents’ driveways to Sefton Council. This should help gauge any future support for the residents here who sadly have been let down very poorly by their Liberal Democrat Councillors, who have chosen to ignore their pleas for help. after almost two whole decades of complaining about the issue.

I am personally very disappointed by the double standards displayed by the Southport Liberal Democrats, who seem to be at odds with their own MP, who has previously highlighted the need to “ply more pressure on Councillors” regarding this long- standing historical issue.”
