Lauren  said to OTS news:  ‘I’m raising money to take part in a volunteering programme with the ‘Lotus Flower Trust’. This will take part in July 2016 to build an Anganwadi, a shelter to provide food, safety and education to the children of Ladakh living in poverty in India.’

The aim of the project is to overall increase the quality of life of children here. Currently, women strap their children to their backs or leave them alone all day unsupervised, whilst they work in the fields.

This shelter will allow mothers to leave their children in safe hands while they go to work, it also provides food, basic education to help the children in later life. It also gives an opportunity for ‘children to be children’.

At the moment 44% of children in India aged 5 and below suffer from chronic malnutrition, the Lotus Flower Trust hope to reduce this number greatly by building these shelters across India.

Every shelter is funded by the students. They are each required to raise £2,400 by the end of May to ensure the materials are available, and hope to complete our shelter during the 3 weeks that they are in India.

‘I am looking forward to the challenge this project will present, and relish in the prospect of learning a new culture and way of life whilst helping deprived children of India.’
