£40 MILLION to clean the Marine Lake

Cleaning Southport Marine Lake will cost up to £40 million, according to a report to the Southport Area Committee.

The figures have been released ahead of a committee meeting next Wednesday 22 March 2017.

This report estimates the cost of dredging the Marine Lake could be anything between £20 to £40 million.

Councillor David Barton said:

“Whilst both proposed figures are exceedingly high I would recommend a through analysis of all available options before any funding is committed to the cleaning and maintenance of the Marine Lake.

The neighbouring Marine Lake railings were badly damaged following a request to undertake sandblasting in place of a more delicate sanding process so I would also recommend other Councillors do not act in haste when deciding upon the next course of action.

“There are far better ways to seek and obtain a return on investment for our local Classic Resort town and I would suggest providing further support for our retail sector as a priority if we are to truly support our residents.

“As someone who used to row on the Marine lake during his youth I would also suggest a more open dialogue with local stakeholders such as Merchant Taylors’ Schools to best deliver on behalf of the local community.”
