Over 500 young people from across Sefton were recently recognised for their achievements at the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards ceremony held at Southport’s Floral Hall.

The ceremony took place 30 March, as young people received their Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards.

Guests of honour at the prestigious ceremony included The Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside, Mark Blundell; The Worshipful The Mayor of Sefton, Councillor Iain Brodie-Browne; Chief Executive, Sefton Council, Margaret Carney; Parks and Greenspaces Manager, Sefton Council, Mark Shaw and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Operations Manager, Kevin Rodgers.

Over 1,000 young people took part in the Duke of Edinburgh award over the last year – which involves volunteering, learning new skills and a camping expedition. Each year the numbers of young people starting their award is increasing across Sefton and the UK.

Margaret Carney, Chief Executive, Sefton Council said:

“The achievement of those young people who complete the Duke of Edinburgh Awards is fantastic.  They show such dedication, commitment and I am sure their families, carers, schools and youth clubs must be justifiably proud of them.  Sefton has a wonderful history of achievement in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and long may it continue.

“I’m sure that the experiences and skills that they’ve learnt will stay with them for the rest of their lives, and will be something that they can take to college, university and employment.”

There are 36 registered Duke of Edinburgh Award centres in Sefton providing young people, aged 14 to 24 years, with the opportunity to take part in the Award.
