Woodlands Animal Sanctuary issues plea for help as donations drop 70%

Holmeswood’s Woodlands Animal Sanctuary has issued a “direct plea for funds”, with rising costs and declining donation levels placing considerable strain on the shelter.

The centre looks after ill, unwanted and neglected animals and specialises in rehoming cats and guinea pigs. It is the only shelter with a dedicated hedgehog unit in Lancashire and Merseyside.

A spokesperson for Woodlands Animal Sanctuary said that a 40% rise in costs and a 70% drop in donations was “not sustainable” and asked members of the public to consider donating.

The Woodlands Animal Sanctuary website shows a number of ways that members of the public can either donate or subscribe to a regular sponsorship at their convenience.

The sanctuary works tirelessly to educate the public on animal care and welfare. Additionally, Woodlands offers inclusive volunteering opportunities, extending a helping hand to individuals with mental health issues and special needs.

W.A.S. also has an established education programme for local schools, clubs, and groups. Their initiatives include visiting care homes, schools, and daycare centres, bringing people closer to animals and fostering empathy.

Woodlands Animal Sanctuary said in a press release: “You can donate in several ways. A single, one-off donation or a regular monthly donation – even just £1 per month from enough people can take a huge weight off our shoulders for fundraising.

“There are also initiatives like Give as you live Online, who donate money to a charity of your choice, every time you shop online. This method doesn’t cost you a penny – the businesses pay the donation on your behalf.

“Or, you can join our sponsorship scheme, by either sponsoring one of our animals, or one of our cat pens and you will receive regular updates and behind-the-scenes gossip about your animal.”
