What is Global Talent Visa In Great Britain

28th February 2023

When the UK left the EU, it faced a severe shortage of skilled workers. Therefore, the country eased the conditions as much as possible and reduced the packages of documents for migration programs for people with special skills that can make a tangible contribution to the local economy.

The Global Talent program, which  appeared  in 2019, is just one of them. It was launched a few days after Brexit, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson  said in plain text that he so wants to “let the world know that we are open to the most talented minds.” Visa recipients under the program are given the right to work for 3-5 years, they can also engage in entrepreneurship. This is a rare stroke of luck, because, for example, work visa holders are “attached” to an employer for years.

Global Talent visa can be obtained by people who have outstanding achievements in three areas:  science ,  art  and  IT . But don’t get discouraged if you don’t work in one of these areas. Often, non-obvious cases can be entered into them. For example, a marketer who works in IT, or an art gallery owner who does not draw anything himself, can get a visa.

How it works in practice

Let’s look at a case study from Sterling Law. They were approached by an individual who works in a good and popular IT company in the CIS, and holds the position of product manager. It is worth saying that not only is your position important here in order to receive a positive response, but also a good and clear application structure, and most importantly – reasons.

An immigration lawyer conducted a thorough analysis of the client’s application, identifying key strengths that could increase their chances of approval from Tech Nation. However, some weaknesses were identified, such as a lack of media recognition and insufficient details in the project portfolio to showcase innovation. To address this, it was necessary to work closely with the client to build a strong portfolio and collect evidence that demonstrated the innovative nature of their projects. This was a delicate but necessary process that required time and effort.

Thanks to a collaborative efforts, the client received approval in half the usual time, allowing them to start planning their future in the UK just four weeks later. Sterling Law also assisted the client with his visa and today he lives and works in the United Kingdom.

Who is considered Global Talent

According to the rules of the program, a case or package of documents can consist of 10 proofs that you can really be considered a talent. Evidence can be all kinds of certificates in your professional field, winning competitions, mentioning you in the media (especially in foreign ones), recommendations from foreign customers (especially British ones), public speaking, portfolio. The fresher the achievements, the better – but if a scientist was published in an international journal 15 years ago, this also counts. In general, achievements “do not reset”.

Global Talent has two subcategories – Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise (the Talent or Promise category must be selected when submitting). To go through the latter, you need to collect three reviews from representatives of European companies and add some certificates, exhibitions. To obtain a visa, you must also receive three reviews from European customers. The chances will instantly increase if they are exactly British.

The difference between the Talent and Promise visas, among other things, is that in the first case, the candidate has evidence of development outside the main field of activity. For example, he himself teaches someone, writes articles about his work, creates a business in this area.

When the documents are collected, it is necessary to obtain  an endorsement  (approval) from one of the organizations selected by the British government. These are companies, scientific organizations, and start-up accelerators. They don’t become your employer, they just judge that the achievements are really outstanding. In parallel, you send a package of documents to the Home Office, the British Home Office. But they will only start considering the application after you receive an endorsement.
