Week 10 Review – Southport Hockey 2018/19

26th November 2018
This week sees a mixed bag of results for Southport Hockey. 2 wins and 2 losses may seem adequate yet plenty of positives to take away from this weekends hockey.
M1 travelled away to Bury who currently sit mid table. Southport have had minor issues this season putting teams away who are nearer to the bottom of the table. Saturday was another one of those games. The Greens started well with two short corner goals from C. Jameson. Following this Bury managed to grab one back just before half time. Half way through the second half a quick set piece play initiated by G. Caton found J. Caton in the D, an exquisite deflection lifted over the keeper and nestled into the top corner. 3-1 up, Southport managed to let their guard down just before full time conceding one more finishing the game 3-2.
L1 also on the road again, this time away at Lancaster Nomads who had an impressive record having only conceded 4 goals in 8 games, sitting just above Southport in 2nd place. Further evidence that good training sessions equal good performances on the weekend, the girls came away 4-1 winners thanks to goals from H. Markland (2), R. Hughes and Y. King. This leaves the Port 3 points behind league leaders Lytham St Annes.
L2s played this weeks only game at Greenbank, unfortunately a sole H. Williams goal wasn’t enough to pick up points for the girls as they went down 2-1 to league leaders Lancaster and Morecambe. The girls created their fair share of chances, which is promising for future games and seasons ahead despite coming away empty handed.
The Beavers this week played away at Bowdon, one of the strongest clubs in the North and arguably the country. Playing against Bowdon Beavers B team, the juniors unfortunately conceded late on losing 2-1. With nothing to be ashamed of, the juniors represented the club in a great manner and are showing great development as the season goes on.
