The Water Whisperer, Gail, Teaches Bobbie a non swimmer with challenges, to swim 1/2 a mile!
Here is a lovely story about Bobbie who is a little boy I taught to swim recently who had some challenges, his progress was amazing!
When Bobbie first came to me his dad told me ‘Bobbie can not focus for more than 10 seconds on anything.’ So I knew it would be a challenge for him to learn to swim. Bobbie had no swimming skill whatsoever however he liked to splash about in the water. I tried a skill I normally do with children without challenges, they generally pick up the skill in a few minutes. However Bobbie was all over the place, looking around the pool taking little notice of me, so I tried another approach.
After a few lessons, Bobbie was swimming doggie paddle (which I don’t usually teach much of,) for 45 seconds! That’s 35 seconds more of focus that his dad had said he could do.
Three months later Bobbie had been coming on a private lesson once a week, Bobbie swam without any floats or support 1/4 of a mile non stop a correct stroke. Not perfect but you can see it was a good style. There was 25 minutes of focus from Bobbie.
A few weeks after that Bobbie swam 1/2 a mile non stop and no support from myself, that’s a massive 45 minutes of focus! Bobbie left for Spain suddenly I was told at the end of his last lesson just before he left me so I had no notice really. Which was a good thing as I tried to teach him the original skill I tried on his first lesson, ( I may not have done that if I’d know he was leaving that day.)
Bobbie got it in just the same amount of time as children who do not have any challenges! He learnt the skill perfectly.
His dad told me that through his work with myself it really had made a massive difference in other areas of his life and his focus had improved a lot on new tasks outside of swimming.
Working with Bobbie and being able to help him so much not just in swimming but knowing how it improved other areas of his life, is so wonderful for me.
I am very proud of Bobbie and grateful his family chose me. Here he is with his lovely trophy for his big 1/2 a mile swim!
