Second round of nurseries achieve Millie’s Mark first aid award

A dozen nurseries across England have become the second cohort of childcare settings to achieve Millie’s Mark, the new quality mark for excellence in paediatric first aid.

The development of the mark was funded by the Department for Education and is being delivered by National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA).

The awards have been made to the following nurseries after achieving the detailed and rigorous process involved, including having all staff members who work with children qualified in paediatric first aid and well-deployed first aid processes in place.

The process takes three to six months and involves intensive support from an NDNA mentor, completion of an audit, risk assessment and spot checks.

The Director of Monkey Puzzle, Southport, said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to all of the Millie’s Mark team for your help and support throughout the process. We are thrilled with everything including the outcome.”

Millie’s Trust was formed in 2012 by Joanne and Dan Thompson whose daughter Millie died after choking on food at her nursery.

Millie’s mum and dad have campaigned tirelessly for all early years staff to be trained in paediatric first aid. New Millie’s Mark awards are now being made to nurseries monthly.

Purnima Tanuku OBE, Chief Executive of NDNA, said: “Millie’s Mark is a fantastic achievement for these childcare providers. It will give parents the reassurance that the nursery they have selected is doing all they can to keep children safe.

“We hope it will help parents make an informed choice about childcare.”
