Southport MP | I hope to see a better experience for Northern Passengers

This was supposed to be a good year for passengers. New services, new routes, and more capacity. In trying to deliver these improvements to people’s lives, however, Northern and Network Rail have just badly inconvenienced them. Since the timetable changes, I have channelled my constituents’ anger into lobbying everyone involved – including my own government. From September, I understand services will resume between Southport and Manchester Piccadilly, and I believe we will start to see the other improvements promised us.

Right now, though, I want to tell you what’s been happening – and why.

Most of the disruption was caused by Network Rail trying – but failing – to electrify the line between Bolton and Preston. The plan was for passengers to enjoy more services by riding new electric trains. Unfortunately, as it became clear that the project wouldn’t be finished in time for the new timetable, there weren’t enough ordinary trains to make up the difference. This triggered a logistical nightmare for operators like Northern.

Despite this, Northern have worked hard to get more trains running, especially in the Bolton corridor at peak hours. A compensation scheme for passengers on affected routes will be also introduced.

Although the disruption has been bad, I believe we should appreciate that it happened because of an attempt to make things better for passengers, and the improvements were building on other positive changes. Every single Northern or Transpennine train has been either refurbished or replaced.

Our town deserves the best from rail operators. We rely on professionals commuting out and tourists travelling in. In my meetings with Northern, Network Rail, and the Transport Secretary Chris Grayling, I always emphasise this point – and why it’s essential for things to return to normal. From September, I expect Northern to resume services between Southport and Manchester Piccadilly. Once we get past the disruption of the last few months,  I also expect to see a better experience for all passengers.
