Smart meter cold calls make councillor’s blood boil

A Southport councillor says he wants to put an end to nuisance calls over smart meters.

Dukes ward councillor Sir Ron Watson says he is fed up by the constant stream of harassing phone calls he and many others receive about smart meters.

Sir Ron said he is ‘completely exasperated’ by the issue having been bombarded with phone calls, emails and texts in a bid by Scottish Power to convince him to have a smart meter installed in his home.

A smart meter is an electronic device that records consumption of electric energy and communicates the information to the electricity supplier for monitoring and billing. Smart meters typically record energy hourly or more frequently, and report at least daily on usage.

He said “I am certainly not alone in expressing complete exas- peration over this issue. There is no statutory requirement to have one and I certainly do not need one as I am very well aware of my monthly consumption, which is reported online.
