Roulette outside bets explained

12th April 2023

Have you ever played a game of Roulette, whether that be online or in person, and not fully understood how to play, so placed betting chips on the table willy-nilly and hoped for the best?

Well, now you don’t have to, as we’re about to explore one category of bets you can make on the Roulette table – outside bets – how to place them and the winning odds attached to them.

So, if you’re ready to feel like a pro when placing down a betting chip or two on the outside bet section on the Roulette table, scroll down and read on.

What is an outside bet and where to find them on the table?

Before we explore the array of outside bets you can place in a game of Roulette, let’s first explore why an outside bet is known as an outside bet, and where exactly on the table you place them.

When looking at a Roulette table, whether that be in person at a brick and mortar casino or virtually via your favourite online casino games, you may notice that the layout of the table is split into three sections. You have the iconic wheel at one end, a numbered grid containing single numbers from 0 to 36 in each box, and boxes around the numbered grid that contain both numbers and words.

It’s the boxes on the outside, containing both numbers and words, where the outside bet section can be found.

Outside bet types

Now you know where on the table layout you’ll need to place outside bets, let’s now look at a handful of the types of bets you can place that are classed as outside bets.

  • Red or Black

This bet type concentrates more on the colour of the number and pocketed compartment rather than the number itself.

Numbers 1 to 36 have been evenly split between red and black, so there’s an even chance of correctly guessing either red or black.

To place a red or black bet, you’ll need to place a betting chip(s) in either the red or black box below the ‘2nd 12’ box. If you place a chip(s) within the red box, your wager will cover all red sections on the wheel, and vice versa if you were to place a chip(s) in the black box.

As mentioned above, since the numbers have been evenly split with both colours, this bet is also known as an even money bet. The betting odds that are attached to a red or black bet is 1:1.

  • High or Low

This bet type concentrates more on the value of the number within the pocked compartment in the wheel, rather than the number itself.

Numbers 1 to 36 have been split into high and low categories, with 1 to 18 classed as low and 19 to 36 as high. Zeros of the game are not included in this.

To place a high or low bet, you’ll need to place a betting chip(s) in the box that either states low or high, or on some tables, 1-18 or 19-36. You’ll need to place your chip(s) in the middle of the box, without touching the box border.

As the numbers are evenly divided, just like the red and black bet, the high or low bet is classed as an even money bet, with a winning payout odd of 1:1.

Now you know how and where to place outside bets on a Roulette table, will you be placing one on your next visit to the iconic table?
