Roadshows reveal new Southport mental hospital

3rd October 2017

Southport residents, local organisations and health service users are welcome to drop-in see the latest design visuals for the town’s new mental health hospital prior to construction starting here this autumn.

Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust and its construction partners will be sharing the visuals and design boards at two public events on October 5 and 11 (9am to 7pm), in the run up to World Mental Health Day. The roadshows are hosted at Mersey Care’s new Life Rooms Southport, situated off Lord Street at 23 to 35 Scarisbrick Avenue, Southport, PR8 1NW.

The roadshows follow planning approval by Sefton Council for redevelopment of land the Trust owns on the former Southport General Infirmary site, off Scarisbrick New Road.

The 44-bed new hospital will replace the existing mental health unit on the site, the Boothroyd Unit, as well as the Hesketh Centre located near Hesketh Park. Construction work is expected to start this autumn.

It will be an opportunity for residents living close to the site to meet the construction team and find out what arrangements are being put in place to minimise disruption to the neighbourhood for the duration of site works. There is no need to book – just drop in 9am to 7pm on the two dates.

A Mersey Care spokesman said:

“We hope as many people as possible drop in to see our display and talk to the staff working on this project, including our construction partners and design team. We’re conscious of keeping local residents living near the Boothroyd site informed so they are aware of arrangements to ensure minimum possible levels of disruption as site works get underway within coming months.

“The roadshows will help illustrate how we are going to enhance the care environment and replace an unsightly derelict vacant plot and old hospital buildings with a bright, welcoming and therapeutic facility for everyone who will use and visit this new hospital. We’re also keen that during the construction this project will benefit Southport’s local economy..”
