Planned roadworks in the North West – summary for Monday 30 October to Sunday 5 November 2017

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 27 October and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

Drivers looking for road works information (such as overnight carriageway closures) for individual schemes should now visit www.trafficengland.com. Some of our larger schemes have project pages giving other information. These can now be accessed from a dedicated regional page: http://roads.highways.gov.uk/north-west.

M53 Junction 3 Woodchurch

An 8 month maintenance project to repair the 2 bridges which carry the junction roundabout over the motorway will start on Saturday (4 November).  There will be occasional overnight – 9pm to 5am – M53 main carriageway closures to install and remove traffic management (narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit under the bridges).  In the new year sections of the roundabout itself will also be closed overnight occasionally for installation of traffic management – narrow lanes and a 30mph speed limit – and resurfacing/re-waterproofing of the bridge decks.   In the new year, a 7.5 tonne weight restriction (with a diversion via junction 1 of the northbound carriageway) will also be in place on the north bridge.  On Saturday (4 November) the northbound M53 will be totally closed overnight for installation of traffic management between junction 4 and 3.  The southbound carriageway will be closed overnight between junction 2 and 3 on Sunday night (5 November).

M56 Junctions 7 and 9 (Bowdon to Lymm)

Overnight work to replace sections of the steel safety barrier in the verges and central reservation started last month and is due to be completed in November. Work is taking place between 9pm and 5am each night, Monday to Friday, and relying on lane closures and occasional slip road closures where work in a lane passes a slip road.  Clearly-signed diversions will be in place when a slip road is closed.

M56 junctions 2 to 5 (Wythenshawe to Manchester Airport)

Resurfacing work is being carried out on the M56 between junctions 2 and 5. Lane and carriageway closures are in place overnight between 10pm and 5am, Monday to Friday, and some work will also be carried out at weekends. Clearly-signed diversions will be in place during carriageway closures.

M6 junctions 16 to 19 (Cheshire smart motorway)

Work is underway to upgrade the M6 to a smart motorway between Crewe and Knutsford, converting the hard shoulder to an extra lane and introducing new variable speed limits. Narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit are in place for the safety of drivers and workers.

M6 junction 21a/M62 junction 10 (Croft Interchange)

Construction work is taking place on a major project to tackle congestion and improve the flow of traffic between the M6 and M62 at Croft Interchange. A 50mph speed limit, backed by average speed cameras, is in place along main carriageways of both the M6 and M62 and interchange link roads.

M6 Gathurst Viaduct

Work on an overnight project to resurface and repair the bridge and to install cross-over gates started in August and is ongoing. Occasional full carriageway and frequent lane closures are needed throughout the project but will be used during overnight periods only. Hard shoulders and a contraflow arrangement with a 40mph speed limit are being used to keep 3 lanes running in each direction during the day.

M6 junctions 37 to junction 36 southbound

Lane closures will be in place next week (from Monday 30 October) as we resurface the carriageway.  The work will take place between 6pm and 6am each night and the hard shoulder will be used an alternative running lane.

M60 junction 8 to M62 junction 20 (Sale to Rochdale)

A major smart motorway scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures, with narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit in place for the safety of drivers and road workers. The clockwise carriageway on the M60 between junctions 8 and 12 will also be closed overnight on Saturday 28 October, and the anticlockwise carriageway will be closed between the same junctions on Sunday 29 October. The closures will be in place between 10pm and 6am, and drivers will be able to follow clearly-signed diversion routes.

M61 between Junctions 5 and 6 (Westhoughton to Middlebrook)

Overnight work to resurface sections of the northbound carriageway started last month and is due to be completed in October. Work is taking place between 9pm and 5am each night, Monday to Friday, and relying on lane closures and occasional slip road closures where work in a lane passes a slip road. Clearly-signed diversions will be in place when a slip road is closed.

M66 Junctions 1 to 2

A project to deliver resurfacing, new drainage and new safety barriers along the northbound carriageway will start in November.  All the work will take place overnight – between 8pm and 5am – between Monday and Friday only.  There will be nightly closures of the northbound carriageway for the full 8 weeks of the work.  A clearly-signed diversion will be in place using the A58 and A56.

M67 Junctions 1 to 3 resurfacing

We’re resurfacing the eastbound carriageway in a week’s project starting on Monday (30 October). The overnight work will take place between 8pm and 5am each night excluding the weekend.  Sections of the eastbound carriageway will need to close whilt this work is being done with the following signed diversion in place: A57 Manchester Road north eastbound, Seymour Street, A57 Manchester Road eastbound, A627 Clark Way.

A556 Knutsford to Bowdon link road

Work is now well underway to convert the old A556 (Chester Road) between the M6 and M56 into a single carriageway B road – the B5569 – with a green corridor for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders. All the approach roads to Mere Junction on the old A556 (A50 and B5569) are being closed overnight, 8pm to 5am, on weekday nights for two weeks until starting from Monday 6 November for resurfacing work. Local diversions will be in place.

A56 Accrington Bypass (Bent Gate to Edenfield)

Overnight work to install new lighting and safety barriers along the northbound and southbound carriageways is due to be completed in the winter. The work is taking place between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday only. Some weekend and daytime working may be required later in the project. Some full carriageway closures may also be required with clearly-signed diversions in place.

A66 Stainmore

Overnight work, including lane closures, is underway to carry out repairs and repaint road markings along both carriageways. The work, between the junction with the A685 at Brough and the boundary with County Durham, is due to be completed in mid-November. During the work, drivers may be held at temporary traffic lights and led past the road works by a contractor’s vehicle (convoy working).

A66 North Stainmore

Work to resurface a half-a-mile section of the A66 between North Stainmore and Brough in Cumbria is due to start on Monday 23 October. Reflective road studs will also be replaced and road markings will be repainted. Most of the work will be done using single lane closures but some overnight closures of the westbound carriageway will be required on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Clearly-signed diversions will be in place.

A66 Newbiggin to Stainton Eastbound

Work is taking place to resurface the eastbound carriageway. Some overnight work will include traffic being held at temporary traffic lights and led at 10mph past the roadworks by a contractor’s vehicle. There will also be some overnight junction closures with clearly-signed diversions in place. The project is due to be completed by the end of October.

A66 Stainton to Dacre

There will be 24 hour lane closures in place for carriageway repairs and resurfacing along the eastbound carriageway until late October. Overnight work may involve drivers being held at temporary traffic lights and led by a contractor’s vehicle at 10mph past the roadworks (convoy working).
