Man detained after arrest attempt turns into armed stand off

8th October 2022

A man who had a ‘warrant out for his arrest’ has been detained by police after an armed stand off in a quiet Southport street.

The male, who neighbours say is well known to detectives, has been arrested after police reportedly swarmed a property on Clifton Road.

Officers had originally attend the address with a warrant for the male’s arrest according to neighbours before the situation quickly got out of control.

Officers in riot gear armed with tasers, as well as a dog unit, were rushed to the house in Clifton Road after a distressed male began brandishing what has been described by eye witnesses as an axe.

The male barricaded himself inside the property and refused to speak with police, before ultimately communicating with negotiation officers via an upstairs window and his rooftop.

Eye witnesses say he visibly brandished a weapon to police and threatened to throw smoke bombs at police who tried to enter the building.

The man was last seen climbing onto his roof after putting on ‘army gear’ while being encouraged by ‘applauding’ neighbours.

OTS News understands the male has since been detained following more than three i hours of tense negotiations between the male and emergency services.

A official statement by Merseyside Police is expected shortly.
