Man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following incident in Southport

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident in Southport this afternoon, Saturday 13 July.

At 3.40pm, emergency services were called to Southport Promenade to reports that a man had been found injured near to the Royal Clifton Hotel. A man is his 40s was found with stab wounds and has been taken to hospital by ambulance for assessment of what are initially believed to be serious injuries.

A 43-year-old man from Southport was detained nearby and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He has been taken to a police station for questioning.

Officers remain in the area carrying out forensic, CCTV and witness enquiries and detectives want to identify anyone with information immediately.

Detective Inspector Tony O’Brien said: “Officers acted quickly to detain a suspect at the scene in connection with this incident.

“However, we still need to speak to anyone who saw the incident or its aftermath as soon as possible. It is a busy and sunny afternoon with plenty of people around, so tell us what you know as we look to piece together exactly what happened.

“Violence has no place in our communities and I can assure everyone in the area that we will act on your information to ensure those responsible are dealt with.”
