Liverpool CFA Final | Southport V Prescott Cables

2nd April 2019

Southport head into their first Final of the season on Tuesday night as they take on Prescot Cables in the Liverpool CFA Senior Cup at Volair Park.

With a mid-table league finish being the best for Liam Watson’s side can get this season, a cup win would be something special for the fans.

This is the first of two finals, with the Port due to play Colne in the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy later this month.

The run in this competition began back in January with a 2-0 over Marine, a victory which set up a Quarter-Final tie against Tranmere Rovers.

After a draw and a defeat against Rovers in the Emirates FA Cup earlier in the season, Southport overcame Micky Mellon’s side with a 1-0 win.

In the Semi-Final the Port came up against the Hallmark Security League First Division South leaders, Rylands.

A Jordan Archer brace and a Morgan Homson-Smith free-kick helped Southport secure their place in the Final, with a 3-1 win over their lower league opposition.

Meanwhile this week’s opponents, Prescot, started this cup run in thrilling fashion, as they beat Lower Breck 4-3 in a high scoring game.

Their Semi-Final tie against Widnes saw an equal amount of excitement.

Following the match finishing 2-2, it was left to penalties to decide who would be in the final, with the Cables being victorious 3-1.

Brian Richards’ side play in Northern Premier League Division One West, where they currently sit in eighth place and four points off the play-offs.

Although the Liverpool Senior Cup is far from the most prestigious trophy on offer in English football, it is still silverware and something that both sides will be eager to be taking home with them.
