2nd February 2024

After replacing the hard disk drive in your MacBook, you will need to install new drivers and the operating system. In this article, we offer a detailed guide to help you install macOS High Sierra. You will learn which models are compatible with this OS, and find out disk configuration, and step-by-step installation algorithms.

Four Steps to Install macOS High Sierra

It’s easy to install the operating system without assistance, as long as you follow the recommendations in the instructions. You’ll need a MacBook that already has High Sierra installed and a flash drive with at least 5.4 GB of memory.

High Sierra compatible models:

  • MacBook and iMac (since late 2009);
  • Mac Pro (as of mid-2010);
  • MacBook Air (as of late 2010);
  • MacBook Pro and Mac mini (as of mid-2010).

1. Preparatory Phase

The first step is to turn off the device and disconnect all external storage devices such as flash drives or hard disks.

Then follow the algorithm of actions provided below:

  1. Connect the bootable flash drive.
  2. Turn on the unit by holding down the Alt (Option or “⌥”) button.
  3. When the download window appears, release the button.

2. Booting from a Flash Drive

To boot from an external flash drive:

  1. Use your keyboard or mouse to select “Install macOS High Sierra” in the download window and click Enter.
  2. Wait for the file copying process to complete.
  3. Select your preferred language when this option appears on the screen and press Enter.

3. Disk Configuration (SSD and HDD)

Users who have a single hard disk installed on their device can skip this step. If your MacBook has two drives, follow the instructions below to continue installing macOS:

  1. Select “Disk Utility” from the menu, click on “Continue” or press the Enter button;
  2. On the left, select the disk that you plan to install the OS on (be careful, because it will be formatted before installation).
  3. Once the new window is opened, click on “Erase”.
  4. Leave the GPM (GUID Partition Map) value set to the default.
  5. If the drive is a solid-state drive (SSD), select APFS (if the new OS is not supported, leave the macOS Extended format).
  6. Click on “Erase”, then on “Done” and exit Disk Utility.

4. Install macOS High Sierra

The final step requires you to select “Reinstall macOS” from the menu and then:

  1. Press “Enter” or “Continue”.
  2. Read the License Agreement.
  3. Click on “Agree” to confirm your consent to the terms of use.
  4. Wait for macOS High Sierra to install automatically and reboot your MacBook.
