Today’s lifting of the suspension of Tory MP Ann Marie Morris over alleged inappropriate racist language has given hope to a Southport Conservative activist who has been suspended for similar behaviour. Devon MP Ms Morris had the Tory Whip in parliament taken away from her in July as a result of using the words “ni**er in the woodpile” while being filmed in a meeting about Europe.

Southport Tory Alan Permain, who described himself in his Twitter profile as “positioned slightly to the right of Attila the Hun” was disciplined when he was exposed as having added to a racist Twitter stream attacking Labour MP Diane Abbott a year ago.

The offending tweet picture of an ape wearing lipstick said: “Forget the London look, get the Diane Abbott look” to which, Mr Permain, then the deputy chairman of the South Ribble Conservative Association tweeted: “Nice lips kid. But a shade too much rouge”. He went on to compound his errors by commenting to the BBC: ” “Why is it particularly offensive? People will take offence about everything, won’t they?”

Mr Permain, who remains a parish councillor in Farrington near Leyland is the husband of the Conservative candidate who came second in Southport’s recent Dukes Ward by-election.
