Hidden gem Southport cinema celebrates seventh birthday

Southport’s ‘hidden gem’ community cinema in the heart of the town centre is celebrating its seventh birthday today.

Bijou Cinema on Post Office Avenue first opened on October 19th 2019 thanks to the tireless work of founder Michael Lockwood.

Film fanatic Michael campaigned for a community cinema in Southport for many years prior to successfully doing so.

With a name inspired by the Bijou Movie Theatre from the 1946 film It’s a Wonderful Life, a year of intense planning saw the much loved cinema open its doors seven years ago.

Sadly in 2021 Michael passed away but on each anniversary his friends and colleagues, who have worked tirelessly to keep the cinema operating, celebrate his life and work.

A spokesperson for Bijou Cinema said: “We’ve had some amazing times in our seven years.

“As always, we use this day to pay tribute to our founder and friend Michael Lockwood, without whom none of this would have been possible.

“Thank you so much to all our supporters, near and far, for your ongoing support. Here’s to many more years!”
