Gardeners heartbroken at Green Flag loss

24th July 2019

Green fingered garden lovers in Southport have reacted with fury after it was revealed the council has lost a number of coveted Green Flag Awards after council chiefs chose not to apply for them.

From August 2019, the borough will no longer be allowed to fly the flag at several prominent sites in and around the town, including Hesketh Park, the Botanic Gardens and Southport Crematorium.

In total across Sefton, the
awards will drop from 12 Green Flags to just three and from seven Green Flag Community Awards to six.

A Green Flag was rewarded to the King’s Gardens in Southport, re-submitted through its bid for Heritage Lottery Funding, and won for the first time in Seaforth Green and South Park Community Garden in Bootle.
