Formby residents are pleading for visitors to take more care and consideration as the hot weather sees thousands of half term holiday makers flock to the coast.
Traffic chaos over the Bank Holiday weekend led to police making an impassioned plea yesterday about long delays and dangerous levels of heat inside stationary cars.
Formby bypass was gridlocked throughout the weekend and traffic both in and out of the village was brought to a grinding standstill as thousands of families took advantage of warm weather to head to the beach.
Half term in Sefton and surrounding boroughs mean traffic levels are expected to remain high throughout the week in line with the warm weather.
Residents have now called on the council and emergency services to do more to stop the area from becoming impossible to get in and out of.
One resident John Hitchens said “I couldn’t leave to visit family elsewhere you just couldn’t get out of the village. What if it had been an emergency? I’m sure that was the case for others.
“I’d tell everyone thinking of coming here this week to just think again. We’ll still be busy but if only some consider going elsewhere it would make a big difference.”
Superintendent Phil Mullally said: “…the demand and disruption being caused to other visitors, businesses and residents is unacceptable.
“My advise to anyone visiting our coastline is please be patient and respectful as you make your way home.
