Fire brigade rescue man trapped in Tulketh Street car park lifts on Boxing Day

27th December 2021

A Southport man has had a Boxing Day he will want to quickly forget after finding himself trapped in a broken lift.

The man, who has asked to remain anonymous, found himself stuck inside the lift of the Tulketh Street NCP car park yesterday morning after going to retrieve his car from Christmas Eve.

Much to the man’s horror, he claims the emergency help button in the lift had stopped working and couldn’t raise anyone on the emergency number that was posted to the lift’s wall.

His wife, who relayed the ordeal to 999 and a fire crew who were later called to the scene, says the ordeal has left the entire family shaken.

She said “my husband went to pick up our car which had been locked in the multistorey since Christmas eve as it closed early and we didn’t see any signs.

“He went back to pick the car up and the lift broke whilst in there.

“The emergency button didn’t work and the engineer wasn’t answering his phone so he called me as I was at home with the kids and I had to call 999 and get a lift to meet him as he was going cold and lightheaded as he had been stuck In there for an hour.

“The fire brigade got there and managed to get him out with the help of a member of staff from flannels who luckily went to work earlier than he should have.

“The lift should not be in use or used as not even the emergency response in the lift works, it was just lucky he had signal and a
phone on him.”
