A tree surgeon has escaped the jaws of death after falling nearly 30 feet from a huge tree on Morley Road, Southport.

A ladder he was standing on snapped and collapsed causing the surgeon to fall well over 20ft to the cold concrete below.

Panicked onlookers ran to help fearing the worst but the man was found to be conscious and responding to questions by the time paramedics arrived.

He has been taken to Southport hospital where he is now being treated for severe trauma and suspected internal injuries.

Paramedics say vital first aid given before they arrived may have saved his life.
