A Birkdale campaigner says people in the resort need to do all they can to keep Smedley Hydro open.

The Trafalgar Road based government building is allegedly on a long list of sites the Government are looking at considering winding down, according to fears raised by ex Councillor David Barton.

As part of an ongoing audit into operational strategy by central government, an appraisal review is being carried out by officials concerning the future use of the Hydro building which employed hundreds of people in Southport.

Mr. Barton said: “I am imploring anyone and everyone to back this crucial community campaign that will only be a strength to everyone.

“The Centre has long been an economic powerhouse and a key player in Sefton’s fortunes contributing immensely towards the local economy especially in surrounding Birkdale Village and beyond.

“I am conducting an online poll to gauge preliminary support of the Smedley Centre staying open which I hope many people will add their vote. Alongside this I have produced o provisional consultation that l intend to submit to the Smedley Centre should the occasion arise in the future.”
