Damien Moore’s week in Parliament

Last week the Government put forward the agreement that it had reached with the European Union on the terms of the United Kingdom’s departure from the EU. I have put forward my thoughts on the Withdrawal Agreement on my website.

This week another important milestone has been reached with the publication of a political statement that has been jointly reached by the UK Government and the EU. The statement sets out areas of future co-operation and provides a vision for our future relationship.

On Tuesday, I attended questions to the department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. I asked the Minister a question about whether a future sector deal for the Tourism industry was forthcoming. As Southport’s economy is supported by tourism, this is particularly relevant for our town. I followed this question with a similar question regarding a hospitality sector deal. The Fisheries Bill continues to progress through Parliament. On leaving the EU, the UK will become an independent coastal State under international law. The Bill proposes powers to allow the UK to determine which vessels may fish in our waters and to set fishing opportunities (catch limits, measured in quota or days at sea).

I attended several drop-in events to support some important causes. This year marks the centenary of the Armistice. Just over 100 years ago the Commonwealth War Graves Commission was established to build cemeteries and memorials to the dead. I was interested to learn more about this important charity.

I also had the opportunity to meet with the Electoral Commission and discuss their proposed Codes of Practice on election spending for candidate and political parties. There is currently a consultation on the two proposals which aim to provide enhanced clarity and place their guidance on a statutory footing. I was pleased to provide my comments to this consultation.

British gas held an event in Parliament where Members could learn more about coping with the winter. I dropped by to learn more as well as hear about safeguarding the elderly and vulnerable people from scammers.

I was also pleased to attend Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP’s event with n-compass northwest. I heard about the important role about n-compass northwest play in making a positive difference to disadvantaged adults and young people in our region.

There is a new care village currently under construction on Oxford Road in Birkdale which is due to open towards the end of 2019. I was honoured to lay the foundation stone. The village will provide valuable services and create around 140 jobs.

I held one of my own drop-in events in ASDA Supermarket on Thursday, residents are welcome to come and talk to me about anything. Look out for me at similar future events.

On Friday, I held my second plastic pick-up event on Southport beach. This was a great success and it was great to see so many people get involved. Clearing plastic has great environmental benefits but it is also good for our community. I will be holding future events and I would be pleased to welcome you to our growing group.
