Food review: Sunday roast at Botanic Road Bar & Eatery in Churchtown

There is only one thing you should do on a Sunday, aside from rest, and that is getting  yourself a belly busting roast dinner.

So, with this in mind, I convinced my partner to put down the sky box set remote and head out to the new Botanic Road Bar & Eatery in Churchtown.

What followed was quite simply a fantastic afternoon of relaxed ambient dining, great food and *hic* good drink!

It’s a good job we booked a table! Although only recently opened the new Botanic is already vibrant and bustling with custom, even on a Sunday afternoon.

Stephen, a very polite and attentive Front of House greeted us and recommended the wine list.
Backed up by the Botanic’s very own sommelier, we were surprised to find we could taste a variety of wines before settling on a very lovely Cabernet Sauvignon Les Templies. Beautiful. Now, did somebody say something about food?

Road Bar & Eatery in Churchtown Wine

Buoyed on by the wine, we scouted the starter menu – me opting for the special prawns with chilli sauce – while my partner went for the scallops.

My prawns were delicious to say the least and the chilli dipping sauce offered a tangy spicy to perfectly accompany the freshness of the prawn.

Looking up to see my partner scoffing down her huge scallops was more than sufficient a sign to show she loved them.

Now of course it’s on to the star of the show. We heard previously so many good things about a Banging Botanic Roast – although if we hadn’t, the satisfactory moans of fellow diners around us already tucking into theirs was enough to tempt us.

We both went for beef of course! The chef cooks it to order and we had ours succulently pink with duck fat roast potatoes.

Crisp, delicious, I was left wanting more – that’s always a good sign if my stomach is begging for more.

Accompanying the roast were seasoned vegetables and individual boats of gravy each were a very welcome touch for a couple who love gravy more than the Oxo family.

We washed it down with our tasty and crisp red wine. A perfect addition to the meal.

Desert next – and for those who read my last review will know how much we both covet a delicious desert!

Glancing the menu before we’d ordered our starters, my eye had already been caught by the artisan cheese board. And yet again I made the right choice!

I was presented with a selection of 5 cheeses crackers, celery, chutney, apple  and grapes – memories of my last gym session faded away. This is what life is supposed to be like. Good company, good food and good wine. If you opt for the cheeseboard yourself I’ll definitely say save the bluecheese till last. It’s the best as the old proverb would say.

If I didn’t know better I’d say my partner also stole a slice! But surely she wouldn’t do such a heinous crime?

She did, and she wasn’t sorry, it was too nice not too steal apparently

Nevertheless this blatant act of food thievery did nothing to stop her devouring a cappuccino pana cotta with ice cream.

It was a delicate desert – a perfect follow up to a heavily delicious roast.

And amazingly the cost each for this wonderful weekend gluttony? Just £15.95 for the 3 course option!

Verdict: This has to be the best roast in Southport for not only quality of food but for value for money and ambiance. I can’t wait for next Sunday! My belt buckle however? Well that’s another story.
