Baroness Williams of Crosby Recognised in New Year’s Honours

Former Crosby MP Shirley Williams has been awarded one of the highest honours, the Companion of Honour, by the Queen in the 2017 New Years Honours list.

Baroness Williams first became an MP in 1964, before winning the Crosby by-election in 1981, and was a member of the famous ‘Gang of Four’ who founded the SDP in the 1980s. She held numerous government roles, including Paymaster General and Minister of State for Education and Science.

She was later influential in the merger between the SDP and the Liberals to form the Liberal Democrats. In 1993, she was elevated to the House of Lords as Baroness Williams of Crosby and led the Liberal Democrats in the Lords from 2001 to 2004.

Hannah Gee, the Chair of the Crosby Liberal Democrats, has welcomed the news that Baroness Williams has been recognised in the 2017 New Year’s Honours List for her services to politics and public life.

Hannah commented, “Baroness Williams has been a tireless campaigner for many years, including as Crosby’s MP.

She introduced the comprehensive school system and has always worked hard to make our politics more progressive. She genuinely understood the need for people to work together.

Baroness Williams has been an inspiration for women in all walks of life and especially for me, as I want to follow in her footsteps and work hard for Crosby.”

In February 2016, Baroness Williams officially retired from the House of Lords but remains committed to Crosby.
