Art students design giant flowerpot for Southport Flower Show

Art and Design students at Southport College have been working their creative magic once again, this time designing a large mural and giant flowerpot to feature at the upcoming Southport Flower Show.

The largest independent flower show in the country, the Southport Flower Show will be held in Victoria Park from 17 – 20 August and is forecast to attract in excess of 50,000 visitors over the four days.

The event will see garden designers and landscapers compete to create a garden full of mystery, wonder and curiosity, in line with this year’s theme of ‘The Curious Garden’.

Chloe Cassim and Issy Fisher, who both study a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design at Southport College, have been commissioned to design a giant flower pot and tools based around ‘The Curious Garden’ theme.

Kelly Broughton, Curriculum Leader of Art and Design at Southport College, said, “This was a great project for our students, working with local employers and large events to give our students real life experience of working to commission. The girls have done a fantastic job and we are really proud of the results.

“We look forward to working more with the Southport Flower Show and other local employers in new live briefs starting in September. We really pride ourselves on our links to industry and such experiences are valuable to ensure our students are ready to progress to university and employment.”

To promote the Southport Flower Show, the flower pot is currently on display at Wayfarers Arcade on Lord Street. It will remain on display until nearer the event when it will be moved to the show ground at Victoria Park.

The girls have also designed a mural that will be displayed at the show, working closely with Ray Roukin, General Manager of Southport Flower Show, to see this large project fulfilled.

In addition to the popular show gardens, the Flower Show promises live music, stunt acts, professional actors, live art demonstrations and an array of hands-on children’s activities.

Get involved and view Chloe and Issy’s creations at the Southport Flower Show, from 17 – 20 August in Victoria Park.
