Animal community cafe devastated after shock break in

23rd August 2023

A Churchtown community cafe that has become a hub for local residents and animals alike has been rocked by an overnight break in.

A crowdfunding campaign has now been launched after the smash and grab robbery at Barklay’s Cafe on Cambridge Road.

Christina, the founder of Little Legs Dog Rescue in Churchtown, posted the crowdfunding campaign which has already raised hundreds of pounds.

She said “One of our biggest supporters has been Lesley at Barklays Dog Cafe in Churchtown. Her and Jess from Northam Bears dog groomers haven’t just helped with my dog rescue, they have become friends too.

“The cafe has become such a valuable place for us, we arrange meet and greets there, hang out after a challenging day and value the space so much.

“This little community cafe welcomes everyone and give so much back, they are the first to rally round when the dogs need help, so now I want to help them.

“In the early hours of 23rd August they were broken into, damage caused to an original wooden door, glass strewn everywhere and cash and the till stolen.

“As they are within a conservation area, the costs to replace items are likely to be higher, the flooring may need stripping out to remove every trace of glass to make it safe again for dog’s paws.

“Our collection pot for a charity event has also been taken, it is a massive blow.

“Can you donate the cost of a coffee? Anything you can give is so grateful received and will be passed directly to Lesley at Barklays to help her rebuild her small business at such a challenging time.”
