In the wake of the Sue Gray report and polls showing nearly 60 % of the country believe Boris Johnson should resign, Liberal Democrats are calling on Southport’s Conservative MP, Damien Moore to make his position absolutely clear. Over 45 Conservative MPs have now withdrawn their support from the PM (31 of them have publicly called for his resignation)
Leader of local Liberal Democrat group John Pugh has called on Southport MP Damien to be clear on his stance on Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The Liberal Democrats highlighted polls showing that 60% of the country believe Boris Johnson should resign.
Last week Damien Moore said that he worried whether the issue of “partygate” could be resolved but stopped short of calling for the Prime Minister’s resignation
“It’s a very, very simple binary choice”, says Lib Dem leader, Cllr. John Pugh. “We know all the facts now and either Damien believes Boris Johnson should resign or should carry on. In his statement on the Sue Gray report, he said he “made his views very clear to the Prime Minister”.
“It is now important that he makes his views very clear to his constituents.
“Were he, as a previously enthusiastic supporter and backer of Mr Johnson, to back resignation calls, it could be massively influential and a sign that change at the top is needed. The snowball effect of such a move should not be underrated.
“I know from experience that it is not an easy decision to tell your leader that time is up, but there are many Conservative MPs who have done so. Amongst those are some individuals I know from having worked with them would not have acted without considerable thought, scruple and consideration of the nation’s interest.
“It is silly to pretend that these matters are easy for politicians with values like loyalty, competence and integrity in play and Mr Moore is entitled to his view on this matter.
“However, he needs to be as clear with his constituents as he was apparently with the Prime Minister. Does he think Boris Johnson is still suited to carry on leading the country – a leader he claimed could. “talk confidently” to the nation and convey his message in “glorious technicolour” … or does he think he should resign?”
