WFF – UK Open Finals including Mr Southport 2016

Gail-report-ots

There was great support at Mike Sullivans WFF – UK Open Finals 2016 including Mr Southport on Saturday 30th, held at The Prince of Wales Hotel.

The standard was superb with some tough decisions on the final overall winner of the WFF UK Open, an extra judge was asked to make the final decision as it was such a close call. The WFF has a little different category’s to NABBA, for example  WFF has Male & Female Sports Model, some past winners, we were told actually went on to get  modelling contracts.  Then other examples were category’s such as Male & Female Toned, Male & Female Trained, Male & Female Athletic, and Male & Female Fitness along with Super Body and Extreme.

There were some familiar local athletes taking part in both the WFF – UK Open and the Mr Southport.  Adam Corlett who runs ACE Life in Formby, James Francis and Dawn Aspinall all who have competed in past body building and fitness competitions were fantastic in the show and all won a place to competed at The World WFF in Dublin in November 2016.

Here is Adam Corlett, in the Male Athletic getting the crowd rocking as he came down the stairs to do his routine to Will Smiths Miami!

adam-1I hear that Adam took part in a charity boxing even the night before and he was only invited by Mike to take part in the show last-minute so there wasn’t a lot of time for preparations however it shows what fantastic shape some of these athletes keep themselves in all year round.  Adam displayed some fitness moves combined with yoga which clearly helped Adam get placed.

I interview Adam and here’s what he said about his experience of the show, Adam has competed in New Zealand in 2014, this was Adams first show in the UK where he also placed 3rd.

“I competed in New Zealand for the first time in 2014 and the standard was high so coming into my first competition in the UK I was interested to see the standard here too. And I must say how impressed I was with all the athletes on display, it’s a tribute the guys and girls who step on stage, the commitment and discipline shown is always admirable. I was tired from the previous nights boxing exploits but as soon as I got the nod to get ready I performed some push ups back stage and got ready to go on and give it my all – whilst of course always taking the enjoyment factor into it! Myself and the other fitness category athletes all had great respect for one another and I was delighted with a third place finish.”

Dawn Aspinall also from Southport entered the Toned Figure and was placed third also.  Dawn had not competed in over 14 years and is a mum!  I asked Dawn to tell me about her experience at the show,  Dawn told me,  “I’ve done 5 shows previously but they were over 14 years ago! This show was a great one to be a part of.  Mike Sullivan has been incredibly supportive of all of us athletes who’ve taken part, giving his time and advice readily, despite being a really busy guy. It was a great atmosphere at the show and the other competitors were friendly and supportive. It’s been a great experience.”

Dawn trains at The Warehouse Gym Southport, the owner Mark Leadbetter very kindly gave Dawn a second, glass trophy for winning!

James Francis from Southport, is quite an experienced competitive bodybuilder.  James has entered nine other shows before, three of them James entered The Mr Southport in 2012, 2013 and 2014 in all those he came 2nd. However today was his time as he placed 1st!

James-2Here’s James’ thoughts on the show

“I would say today I was very impressed with the WFF – UK show and the way it was ran, good atmosphere and enjoyed every minute.  I have also felt fit and healthy all day,  better than what I ever have done before as I’ve not had to do anything drastic and did a long 21 week diet taking it slowly.  I was 17 2 at Xmas! However I weighed in today at 13 stone 10lbs. I am doing the IBFA Liverpool Show today in the short class and the open still feeling good!”

The two over all winners of the WFF – UK Open were in phenomenal shape! As noted the extra judge had to be called in for the male overall winner as it was such a tight call.

danny-overall-winnderoverall-girl-winerAll the athletes were amazing and put on a great show for the audience. Mike Sullivan ran a superb event, all the athletes only made fantastic comments regarding their experience in the show. Mike has been around for decades in thee bodybuilding world, winning title after title before he retired!  I look forward to seeing the NABBA North West in a few weeks time also held in Southport.

The Over 50’s category was amazing.

The terminator guy, he did his posing routine to the theme tune of Terminator! Really good!
