Southport’s KGV students take exclusive insight into Jaguar Landrover
Advanced Level IT students at King George V College were recently treated to an exclusive insight under the bonnet of the UK’s largest automotive manufacturer, Jaguar Landrover.
The visit, which took place on 25 January, included a presentation about the company, health and safety considerations and then an incredible tour of the factory in Halewood, Liverpool.
Students were able to see first hand, how IT is used within such a huge organisation and manufacturing plant. They also learned how computer systems, robots and staff integrate to build the Evoque and Discovery Sport models from start to finish.
Course Leader of IT, Martin Fletcher commented, “The students had an excellent day and seeing first-hand how IT enables a Global organisation to deliver a world class product helped put context to the units that they study with the BTEC IT programme”.
Current student, Amber Smith, commented, “I found the Jaguar Land Rover trip fascinating. I enjoyed watching a sheet of metal get cut and shaped and come out as a perfectly functional car.
“The whole manufacturing process was very interesting to watch with each robot and person working in unison. I might consider taking up an apprenticeship at Jaguar Landrover in the future.”
In addition to exciting learning experiences outside of the classroom, students who choose to study IT at King George V can expect to achieve top grades. In summer 2016 all students achieved 100% high grades with over half achieving D*D*D* – the highest grade possible.
68% of the students from the 2016 cohort progressed onto University, all reading a Computing based degree. Of the students that didn’t progress onto university, 60% were accepted onto an Apprenticeship Programme, with previous alumni having gone on to an Apprenticeship at Jaguar Landrover itself, whilst the remaining students took up relevant roles in industry.
