MATCH PREVIEW | Barrow v Southport

Southport have the chance to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat to Aldershot Town when they visit Barrow on Tuesday evening.

The Sandgrounders will need to improve their form away from home, having not won a league game on the road since the end of October.

Barrow will have to pick themselves up from the disappointment of defeat in the third round of the FA Cup, having lost 2-0 at home to Rochdale at the weekend. Arguably then, the visit to Holker Street may come at a good time for Southport, with the possibility of a deflated performance from the Bluebirds following the end of their cup adventures.

Barrow sit one place and three points outside the play-off spots but have two games in hand on Dover in fifth place.

The last meeting between the two sides ended in humiliation for the Sandgrounders, a 4-1 defeat in Steve Burr’s first home match in charge.

Only two of the starting eleven that day, Ross White and Liam Nolan, remain at the club, and therefore a different challenge awaits the Cumbrian side on Tuesday night.

If Southport defy the odds and come away with three points they will draw level with Torquay in seventeenth place, and will overtake Braintree as long as they better the Essex side’s result at home to Sutton United.

Whilst certainly the underdogs, if survival is to be achieved then the Sandgrounders must cause a shock or two somewhere along the line, and with Barrow potentially suffering from an FA Cup hangover then the coach will at least set off north with hope, coupled with motivation to avenge September’s embarrassment.
