Labour councils will destroy our Green Belt forever Action needed before it’s too late

Green Party Liverpool City Region Mayoral Candidate Tom Crone and Greater Manchester Mayoral Candidate Will Patterson will be in St. Helens on 14th March to meet with and support local citizens fighting council plans to release greenbelt land.

Both the St. Helens Local Plan and the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework involve the release of precious greenbelt land for housing and industrial development, a policy that is firmly opposed by the Green Party at every level.  The candidates note that these plans have roused a great deal of opposition from local residents in St. Helens and Greater Manchester and they are looking forward to having the opportunity to discuss the issue in depth with the people of St. Helens.

Tom Crone, the Liverpool City Region Mayoral candidate who spoke at the planning committee meeting to oppose plans at Florida Farm, Haydock says:

“The Green Party will continue to oppose green belt development in the City Region. Brownfield sites must be exhausted first. When green belt land is lost it is lost forever. St Helens council have a shocking willingness to develop at all costs”.

Will Patterson, the Greater Manchester Mayoral candidate, adds:

“What’s happening here in St Helens is at real risk of being repeated across Greater Manchester.  I’ll put an end to local councils’ “build first, ask questions later” policy, and won’t accept sacrificing our precious green spaces for big ticket, unaffordable housing developments.”

The event will be held at the Deafness Resource Centre (32-40 Denton’s Green Ln, Denton’s Green, Saint Helens WA10 2QB) on 14th March.  Doors will open at 10:30 am and the program will start at 11:00.
