Patients at Southport Hospital are facing major disruption as junior doctors have gone on strike in a dispute with the government over a new contract, Tuesday January 12 2016.

The doctors are providing emergency cover only during the 24-hour walkout, which got under way at 08:00 am. Scores of operations have had to be cancelled as a result of the strike.

This is the first of three walkouts planned for the coming weeks.

The other two are: 08:00 am Tuesday 26 January to 08:00 am Thursday 28 January (junior doctors will provide emergency care only) 08:00 GMT to 17:00 GMT Wednesday 10 February (full walkout).

A second non-emergency walkout is planned from 8am on January 26, for 48 hours. This will be followed by a full withdrawal of junior doctor labour between 8am and 5pm on February 10.
