One of the many drivers for the creation of the BID was concerns about falling visitor numbers to the town.   Footfall had been in steady decline in Southport for several years, as it has been in high streets, town and city centres around the country.  Footfall in the town is measured by independently managed footfall cameras installed in Chapel Street and on Lord Street.  The data is compiled and presented by a nationally recognised data management company.

Since the BID started its programme, the declining trend in footfall has been reversed, whereas UK footfall overall, and that of the average for the country’s other coastal towns and resorts has continued to fall. This positive trend has continued into 2017; this January’s footfall for Southport was 6% higher than it was over the same period in 2016. The UK, and coastal town’s average continued to drop – we are bucking the trend.

Data compiled by STEAM – the official body for tourism economic activity monitoring also shows positive figures for Southport

Visitor Numbers – 8.65m up 4.5%

Economic Impact – £498.08m up 5.7%

Total VE employment – 6,340 up 3%
